Repeat Prescription Policy

Please read our policy statement before you order your pet’s medication.

Certain medications are prescribed for long-term treatment of your pet.

Most medications that we use are ‘prescription only medications’. This means they need to be dispensed by a veterinary surgeon for ‘an animal under their care’. This means that the vet is taking legal and ethical responsibility for the correct use of these medicines. Naturally, this means that there are certain constraints.

How to order your pet’s medication

Please call the surgery where one of our receptionists will take your order. Please also leave a telephone number in case we need to contact you further about your prescription request.

Please allow at least 48 hours for us to make ready your prescription.

This:.

  • Gives us time to check your clinical records to ensure the medication is still correct and appropriate for your pet. It may be the case that they require a check-up.
  • Gives the vet time to issue and dispense the prescription
  • Allows us time to order the product needed if it is not in-stock
  • Means that your prescription is ready for you when you visit the surgery

Repeat examination policy

For all medications, your pet needs to be assessed by one of our vets at least every 3 months. If they are on a new medication or dose, more frequent check-ups may be required.

The reasons for this include:

  • We need to make sure that your pet is not suffering from any side-effects
  • We must ensure that the medication is still appropriate and, if needed, discuss possible new treatment options
  • We need to weigh your animal to ensure the dose is still correct
  • It is a legal requirement for ourselves to ensure you and your pet are still ‘under our care’ legally

The exception to the ‘3-month rule’ is preventative treatment for fleas and worms. In this case, we only need to have examined your pet within the last 12 months to dispense them.

Please note, we do not routinely authorise repeats of either antibiotics or ear-drops.

Our standard consultation fee applies for any repeat medication consultations. Charges will also apply for any tests recommended upon examination.

Please call the surgery to request the cost of specific medications.

Clients are welcome to request a written prescription for medications. This would allow you to obtain these products from another veterinary surgeon or a pharmacy.
